Keywords
Here are some tips that helped me when using keywords:
Firstly keywords are not just 1 worders, they are phrases. try to use phrases as keywords as well as 1 worders. When a user searches google or yahoo, most of the time they would type in a phrase to search instead of a single word. Also keywords should define your product or idea.
Now research your 1 worder or phrase by searching google or yahoo with your chosen keywords. Pretend your 1 worder is the word "free". search it with google, and you will see that google returns +- 3,570,000,000 results.
This means that this word is too general and has too much competition and just wouldnt be a good keyword to use. However, you can still use the word free in your content.
If "free" isn't a keyword, then what is? Keywords are basicaly two to five word phrases you expect people to search for to find your website. My best advice for getting your keywords phrases: If you were looking for your product, what would you type?
Your Keyword length is also important as a longer search phrase is associated with better targeting. Shorter keyword searchers are shoppers and longer keyword searchers are buyers. Most good keyword phrases are 2 to 5 words long.
Research keyword tags on competitors websites and also a note of caution is that you can not optimize a page for 20 different keywords. As you add more keywords to the mix, you lessen the keyword density and change the focus of the page. The page can start to sound robot created if you are optimized for too many terms.
You usually do not want to use misspelled keywords or phrases in your body or page title as they will look unprofessional. It can however help you to add misspelled keywords to the meta keywords tag.
Most search engines are not case sensitive so "Free" is the same thing as "free". Also hyphenated words are treated as a space eg. e-mail.
There are a few apps on the web which do a good job of helping you find which keywords get searched for and how frequently they are search for.
I will do some more research and post some of the apps here.
