Again the point is simply a protection method, its a very common feature found on almost every web script.
If you don't want to use it fine but its clear what the reasons for using it are.
I doubt anyone here has a script that can read the captcha on lavalair...
And quite simply with the captcha installed, if your site was on a list of sites to be spammed the script would fail and not work on your site.
If your not liking having so much to enter on registration why noy remove some of the useless fields that can be added after they login, like date of birth, location etc...
