tutorial for open source platform

Would anyone like to tell which one is the best tutorial to learn open source platform. Because these days I design am designing Joomla Templates , CSS Templates and Website Templates . So that why I want to get grip on the open source language so that I become good designer as well as developer.

try php just for server side scripting, javascript for client,and python for both.all three are easy to learn. beware that python isnt widely spread as web scripting language,and i find my skills with python just for pc coding,but its easy so give his a chance.
