From what you have written it seems that your knowledge in php is still very limited. You should download some ebook on php and read it. It will help a lot. Now coming to your problem which is how to add new features into your site, every script is not the same. To know what files to edit to add a particular new function depends upon the script you are using. For example if you want a function to be accessible only in chat rooms you can edit the chat room file and write the function there. If you want a function to be accessible everywhere on your site you may want to write it in some file which is included in every file.
