      I think we all know about meta tags, but apparently most search engines ignore meta tags, is this true?

      I still use meta tags. i use the following:
      Content type:
      Code:
      <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
      language type: apparently helps google categorize.
      Code:
      <meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-GB" />
      Description: should apparently be a short description of your page. (i think this text should also be on your page) google uses this to as a description in the search query.
      Code:
      <meta name="Description" content="SynergyX is an innovative company that offers the best and latest technology in most fields of the IT industry. We specialise in corporate websites, online web applications, hosting, online business solutions, design, search engine optimization, network solutions, website design and corporate imaging." />
      Keywords: im not sure if this is true but most search engines only look at 20 keywords, so max of 20 keywords. The first 10 should be top priority.
      Code:
      <meta name="Keywords" content="synergyx,web hosting,web design,websites,online web applications,adsl,graphic design,domains,ecommerce,shopping cart,cms,content management system,online business solutions,seo,search engine optimization,hardware,network solutions,website design,corporate imaging,web developers" />
      robots: both these tags are used to tell crawlers what to do. this lets them index all pages
      Code:
      <meta name="ROBOTS" content="INDEX, FOLLOW" />
      <meta name="robots" content="ALL" />
      copyright, author, designer: general info about yourself
      Code:
      <meta name="copyright" content="synergyx.co.za" />
      <meta name="author" content="SynergyX" />
      <meta name="designer" content="Shaughn - SynergyX" />

          i wasnt sure because when i did research on this topic, most of the time it was said that search engines ignore meta tags but other times it was the opposite.

          i even bought a book on seo to get a better understanding

            its kinda confusing if meta tags is ignored or not cause of those opposing articles in the net. so i ended up not using it cause i think its messing up my header. lol. i ended up using metatxt and google sitemap (mobile).

              i had a look at these pages and its all really basic stuff that most of us know already. I have been told recently that new websites should start RSS feeds because aparently it is gauranteed to boost traffic.

              i have started creating rss version 2.0 and it is all really simple. Afterwards you need to find an app that will submit your feed to all major search engines or blogs, etc. i have the app if any 1 wants.

                  meta tags alone are not part of the big crawlers criteria.. reason being because people would spam meta tags which unrelated words to boost traffic and rankings. meta tags are still good however, some reasons...

                  1. smaller crawlers still use them, they crawl you, google crawls the small crawlers and you get indexed higher via that 3rd party
                  2. if you have the word coding in your meta tag, and it appears many many many times across your pages, it means that the meta tag is well related to content and gets higher approval.

                  so yes keep using meta tags but be careful, there are sites out there that can show u how well ur tags represent the data on your site which helps indicate if you have bad tags. However while good meta tags do help u in listings, bad ones are far more detrimental. no meta tags or very limited tags are better than a load that contain many bad ones

                  note: when i say meta tags im referring to the keyword tag.. force of habit really lol

                  -------

                  the main method of SEO is linking and submission. Submit your sites to any and every indexer you can. there are programs and sites that will do preprogrammed sites automatically for you in mass. The more indexes you have the better ur rankings globally .

                  Links are the biggest part of beating ur opponent. the more linkbacks to your site you have the better chance you have in it appearing near the top on related searches.

                  there are also other factors, conforming to w3c standards and making sites available for disabled users will help a great deal on some of the new crawler applications.

                  The art of SEO is complex, i have only scratched the surface and im by far no expert. put it this way, you wouldnt see 2 and 3 year courses in SEO with lovely 20-30k jobs in pure SEO work once ur done if it was simple and a one route path. You need to learn how each main crawler works, and make a plan of action that targets each crawlers main filters both independantly and as a whole tactical approach. On top you need to keep ahead of development adapting your technique all the time.

                  There is not a clear cut path, if there was, then thered be step-bystep instructions everywhere and applications to do most of the legwork for you available on every software site around... and more importantly, you wouldnt see such high paying seo jobs around

                    Here is a SEO book i read recently, im not sure if it is any good, but i have read through it and performed most of the task that they say could improve your rankings.

                    Code:
                    [ATTACH]1097[/ATTACH]
                    Also submit your site with Alexa.com in order for them to crawl yoyr site and view various stats such as your ranking. After using some of the methods in this book, i have seen an improvement in traffic

                          no idea, but then again alexa is a much more powerful indexer than google or other such crawlers, so its possible it crawls differently and/or much slower
